worked with industry to extinguish the flames, their efforts did not avail to prevent the total destruction of the house. We regret to have to add that two small brick tenements, adjoining the fired building, were crushed beneath the weight of massive parts of the walls of the larger one as they rolled off. We have not seen or heard an estimate of the damage, but learn that the three, belonging to the same parties, were incurred in the Mutual company. Fortunately, and we might add miraculously, no person sustained bodily hurt. The crushed tenement was tenanted by Mr. Stahle, who escaped with his family, though he lost something in the shape of household goods. The large brick building next to the burnt one, north, was saved by the active exertions of the firemen. We had almost omitted to say that Butt & Reynolds, auctioneers, occupied the storeroom of the building consumed, but what losses they sustained, if any, has not transpired.-- Portsmouth Transcript, Saturday.
