a member of the Institute, then Governor of the Commonwealth. The manufacture of watches by machinery was first undertaken by Messrs. A. L. Dennison, Edward Howard, and Samuel Curtis, of Boston, who established a factory at Roxbury, Mass., in 1850, under the name of the Boston Watch Company. Finding their expenses very large they moved to Waltham in 1854, but meeting with unexpected obstacles they became bankrupt in 1856. Their property was sold by an assignee, and was purchased by R. E. Robbins for Appleton, Tracy, & Co., of New York. A. L. Dennison remained as mechanical superintendent. Appleton, Tracy, & Co. in 1858 sold out to the Waltham Improvement Company, which, by an Act of the Legislature passed February 4, 1859, was allowed to take the name of the American Watch Company.
