The first public meeting of citizens to consider matters relating to the war was called by the selectmen, and was held on the afternoon of Saturday the 20th of April in the town hall; William T. Davis was chosen chairman, and Leander Lovell, secretary. The following resolutions were introduced by John J. Russell, Esq., and adopted by the meeting:— Resolved, That it is our pleasure, as well as our duty, to see to it that our brave volunteers be encouraged by the knowledge that the welfare of those near and dear to them is made the care of their fellow-citizens who remain at home.
