His first step was to join the execrable Anti-Masonic Crusade in New York — an attempt to proscribe all citizens who were Masons. In that he and his confederates, warring upon the rights of their fellow-men, were beaten, and he found he had made a great mistake. He covered up his tracks as well as he could, and quietly waited to repair his political fortunes. He soon found that the Abolition sentiment was to be blown into a flame; but as he got into power as a Whig, he made no immediate use of it, save, as Governor of New York, to refuse to surrender fugitives from Virginia, and to deny the right of Southern men to their property.
