or schooling of her children, doubtless a reimbursement for what she had paid out for the purpose to some one else. With the shortsightedness of the average town manifested when providing school accommodations, the brick school back of the meeting-house was soon outgrown and the propositions for relief that were brought forward seem to have caused considerable turmoil and bad feeling. In the warrant for the meeting of March 12, 1804, was an article to hear and act upon the petition of Eben Simonds and others for dividing the town school. A committee was appointed to examine what alteration might be made in the town school and to report their opinion at the April meeting. This whole matter is very important, as it marks the abandonment of a principle in education which gave strength to the town school of Medford through the first century of her history—the principle of concentration.
