Smith, John cotton 1765-1845 Legislator; born in Sharon, Conn., Feb. 12, 1765; graduated at Yale College in 1783, and was admitted to the bar in 1786. Member, clerk, and speaker of the Connecticut Assembly from 1793 to 1809, excepting a service in Congress in 1800-6, he became a leading man in the State, and in 1809 was chosen a member of the council and a judge of the Supreme Court of Connecticut. Elected lieutenant-governor before the second term of the court, he was elected governor innt-governor before the second term of the court, he was elected governor in 1813, and remained in that office five years. Governor Smith was a member of the Society of Northern Antiquaries, also of other learned societies at home. He was president of the Connecticut State Bible Society, of the American board of foreign missions, and of the American Bible Society. For several years he was an occasional contributor to various scientific and literary periodicals. He died in Sharon, Dec. 7, 1845.
