Mayor Fay of Chelsea was at Washington when information of the battle was received; he immediately proceeded to Yorktown, and caused the bodies to be embalmed and forwarded to Chelsea for burial.
The names of the slain were George A. Noyes, William D. Smith, Walter B. Andrews, and Allen A. Kingsbury.
The funeral ceremonies took place on the 7th of May.
The services in the church were attended by His Excellency Governor Andrew, and his military staff, and a vast concourse of the citizens of C wholly suspended.
The report was ordered to be inscribed on the city records, together with the following preamble and resolutions:—
Whereas the city government have learned with feelings of deep sorrow of the death of George A. Noyes, William D. Smith, Walter B. Andrews, and Allen A. Kingsbury, members of the First Massachusetts Regiment, Company H of Chelsea, who were killed in making a gallant attack in front of the rebel lines at Yorktown; it is therefore—
