Several other meetings were held during the year, at which money was appropriated, and means taken to obtain volunteers to fill the quota of the town. 1865. January 9th, Voted, to raise fifteen hundred dollars to pay bounties to twelve volunteers. Somerset was reported by the selectmen in 1866 as having furnished one hundred and ninety-seven men for the war, which may have been a little in excess of the credits which the town received; but Somerset filled its quota upon every call of the President, and at the end of the war had a surplus of fourteen over and above all demands. Four were commissioned officers. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was thirty thousand four hundred and eight dollars and fifty-five cents ($30,408.55).
