He was graduated at Harvard in 1788. Phillips Academy, Exeter, N. H., was conducted by him until 1838.
Among his pupils were George Bancroft, Lewis Cass, Edward Everett, John G. Palfry, Jared Sparks, and Daniel Webster.
He died in Exeter, N. H., Oct. 25, 1849.

Carmichael, William 1776-1795
Diplomatist; born in Maryland, date uncertain; was a man of fortune.
He was in Europe in 1776, and assisted Silas Deane in his political and commercial operations in France.
He also assisted the American commissioners in Paris.
In 1778-80 he was in Congress, and was secretary of legation to Jay's mission to Spain.
When the latter left Europe (1782) Carmichael remained as charge d'affaires, and retained the office for several years.
In 1792 he was associated with William Short on a commission to negotiate with Spain a treaty concerning the navigation of the Mississippi.
Sparks's Diplomatic correspondence contains many of his letters.
He died in February, 1795.

Clergyman; born in Boston, Mass., Aug. 8, 1814; graduated at Harvard in 1833; ordained a Unitarian pastor in 1840; president of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and author of History of the battle of Bunker Hill, and biographies of John Mason, William Penn, Anne Hutchinson, Jared Sparks, Count Rumford, etc. He died in Boston, Mass., Dec. 20, 1894.

Felton, Cornelius Conway 1807-
Educator; born in West Newbury, Mass., Nov. 6, 1807; graduated at Harvard in 1827; appointed Latin tutor there in 1829, and Professor of Greek Literature in 1839; and was president of Harvard from 1860 till his death in Chester, Pa., Feb. 26, 1862.
He is the author of Life of William Eaton in Sparks's American biographies, and many books on general literature.

Clergyman; born in West Cambridge, Mass., Nov. 9, 1785; graduated at Harvard in 1815; became pastor of the Unitarian Church in Watertown, Mass., in 1819.
Among his writings are Historical sketch of Watertown; Life of John Eliotin Sparks'sAmerican biographies; Memoirs of Rev. John Allyn, Dr. Gamaliel Bradford, Judge Davis, and Sebastian Rale, etc. He died in Cambridge, Mass., April 7, 1863.

Educator; born in Medfield, Mass., Feb. 10, 1812; graduated at Brown University in 1831; became Professor of History and Political Economy there in 1880.
His publications include the lives of Roger Williams and Gov. Samuel Ward, in Sparks's American biographies; History of American Baptist missions, etc. He died in Providence, R. I., April 3, 1889.
