ornamentation is of such a character as to give it the appearance of lightness. The ground work on the exterior is salmon color; on one of the side panels is a beautiful painting of Pocahontas saving the life of Captain Smith, and on the other a representation of Smith's famous com bat with Bonney Mulgrove. The door panel is ornamented with a picture of a Knight Templar in full costume, as a compliment to E. H. Gill, Esq., former Superintendent of this railroad. Besides the historical illustrations, the sides of the vehicle are decorated with arabesque drapery, Cupids and wreaths of roses. Inside are eighteen beautiful vignettes, representing landscapes and water scenes. The roof is constructed in what is called the "French style," enabling a tall man to stand erect without peril to his beaver.--The omnibus was made by John Stephenson, of New York, to the order and under the direction of the company. Last, but not least, we may mention that it has been christened "Petersburg."
Fires near Winchester. --The residence of John Stephenson, Esq., near Winchester, Virginia, was burned, by incendiaries a few days age. Loss, $5,000. The elegant mansion of Captain H. M. Nelson, in Clarke county, was partially burned some nights previously; and, on Sunday night, about 1,200 bushels of wheat, belonging to D. W. Sowers, in the same county, were destroyed by incendiaries.
Latest from the Southern coast. Running the blockade — severe engagement at port Royal — the Number of killed on our side, &c. Augusta, Ga., Jan. 3. --A ship, a schooner, and the steamship Isabel, arrived at Charleston yesterday morning, having run the blockade, as well as having avoided the old whalers, which have recently been sunk in the channel. The Savannah Republican, of yesterday morning, says that Capt. John Stephenson's schooner Lucy Waring, which has just been released from the Lincoln fleet arrived yesterday, and says that seventy-five vessels were at Port Royal. The Republican says the Federals landed 6,000 troops at Port Royal on Wednesday morning under cover of shells and gun-boats. Gen. Pemberton, with Jones's regiment and four companies of Dunovant's regiment advanced upon them when a fierce battle ensued, which resulted in driving the enemy, with considerable loss, under cover of their guns. The Confederates fell back to Gardiner's corn
