doing justice to the subject, or giving to our readers a fair idea of the great service rendered our cause by this battery, we propose to sketch a brief account of its experiences and achievements from the moment of its crossing to the north bank of the Chickahominy until its last gun was fired in the great battle of Malvern Hill. On Wednesday, the 25th of June, the Purcell Battery, Captain William J. Pegram, attached to Field's brigade, General Ambrose P. Hill's division, was encamped at Storr's farm, on the west of the Central railroad and south of the Chickahominy. The company numbered five commissioned officers, eleven non-commissioned officers, and eighty-three privates. The commissioned officers were: William J. Pegram, captain; Henry M. Fitzhugh, first lieutenant; W. A. Allen, second lieutenant; Joseph P. McGraw, third lieutenant; M. Featherstone, fourth lieutenant. Captain Pegram, though scarcely twenty years of age, commanded the entire respect and confidence of his men.

nson's front. Its loss in these two engagements was five officers and 121 men. On the afternoon of the 21st it moved to the right of the Courthouse, and made a reconnoissance, in which Lieutenant E. S. Edwards was killed and two men wounded. At Jericho Ford, on the 23d of May, the 28th advanced as far as any of the troops engaged, held its ground until relieved that night, and removed all its dead and wounded. Its loss was two officers and twenty-eight men. On the 31st of May, at Storr's farm, on Tottapottamoi creek, near Pole Green Church, it was engaged all day in heavy skirmishing and was under a terrible artillery fire. Fatal Railroad Casualty. --On Wednesday night, a train on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad was backing in the vicinity of Storr's township, Ohio, when the rear car was precipitated into Mill Creek, by the carelessness of the bridge tender, who left the draw open. Alfred Neal, a brakesman, was instantly killed.
