e First Brigade with great success, and proved a most energetic and efficient commander. He succeeded General Cruft in the command of the brigade after the battle of New Hope Church. General W. C. Whitaker very ably managed his brigade, and deserves well of the Government. He was compelled to leave, from sickness, after the assault of Kenesaw Mountain. The brigade (the Second) has since been well managed by Col. J. E. Taylor, Fortieth Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Both Colonels Kirby and Taylor well deserve, and have honestly earned, promotion. I must also make honorable mention of the two batteries under my command, Capt. A. Morrison, Fifth Indiana, and Capt. Jacob Ziegler, Battery B, Independent Pennsylvania. They rendered excellent service daily, and always courted exposed positions, never slackening fire, however much exposed, either to the artillery or musketry of the enemy. les.--Sarah Jane Melton, arrested on Saturday "for stealing" some articles of personal property from C. B. Williams valued at $30, was acquitted.--Winston and two other negroes suspected of knowing who killed Mrs Schriver, were committed for another hearing.--Antonio Sulice, a foreign-looking nigger, arrested for getting drunk and lying down on Main street, was arraigned; but proving to be in the employment of a Southern officer, and promising to stay in camp, was let loose.--Jas slave of J. E. Taylor, arrested as a runaway by officer Baptist, was committed.--Robert Shelton, slave of Henry Cox. and Mary. slave of Walter Leak, were ordered a licking for indulging in a mutual encounter on Sunday, in the alley in rear of the Exchange Hotel.--Daniel Keys was arraigned for stealing $20 from Wm. Maddox. It appeared that the party wanted change for the note, and Keys proffered his services to obtain it. He took the note for that purpose, but forgot to return. He was sent to the Hustings Co
