A trip to Boston. A citizen of King William county, Va., started some ten or twelve days ago on a journey to Boston, for the purpose of seeing his old mother, and in due time arrived in that "hot-bed of Puritanism, fanaticism and abolitionism." He writes us a letter giving an account of his adventures on the route and after reaching his destination, some portion of which we copy. Speaking of the flight of the Massachusetts troops through Baltimore, which he witnessed, he says: "They were going hurriedly, sometimes in a half run, and loading as they went; and the most scared set of poor devils I ever saw.--When I first saw so much firing I certainly thought it was blank cartridge, until I saw them picking up the dead and wounded. After this, the excitement was the wildest I ever witnessed. I heard several gentlemen say in the most vehement manner that they had been Union men at 9 o'clock that day, but now they were desperate and ready for the issue." The writer proc
pany, the substantial evidence of which proclaims the sincerity of his devotion to the cause of our mother State; and that we recognize in Mr. Taylor a man of eminent public spirit and true patriotism--one worthy to be a bright exemplar to the fathers of the land. 2. Resolved, That Mr. Taylor be elected an honorary member of this company. As a further instance of Mr. Taylor's liberality, we may mention that he has also given $950 to Capt. Wm. R. Aylett, of the "Taylor Grays," King William county, for the use of that company. The Wytheville papers chronicle the following evidences of individual patriotism: Mr. Jos. Cloyd, of Pulaski, has authorized the Governor to draw on him for $10,000, and says his whole fortune is at the service of the Governor it required. Capt. Robt. Gibbony, of Wytheville, has agreed to uniform the "Davis Chargers" himself, and furnish two horses for the use of the company. He also gave to the Grays upwards of $100, and proposes to give
born and James Kirk. [A large number of Ordinary keepers have not renewed their licenses, and the Court sits to-day for the purpose of renewing them.] The case of Elijah, slave of Stephen Hunter, for burglary, in breaking open Jas. H. Beagleston's store-house, and stealing $300 worth of groceries, was continued until the next term. E. Beathy was tried for misdemeanor. The jury failed to agree and were discharged. The defendant was then let off on payment of costs. Richard Morris, alias Richard Johnson, was tried for stealing a lot of chickens, of the value of $3. of Ro. E. Johnson, of King William county. He plead guilty, and was sentenced to one day's imprisonment. He had been in jail four months. The Grand Jury found a true bill against David W. Hughes for permitting an unlawful assembly of slaves and illegal gaming in his house, and against Fleming Morgan and Jas. Howard, for an affray in a public street. The Grand Jury were then discharged for the term.
in saying that his void will be hard to fill. For fidelity in the discharge of every duty devolving on him in a public capacity, the people could not have selected one more eligible. As to his worth and appreciation at home, a more convincing proof could not have been manifested than the mournful lamentations and expressive countenances of his truly bereaved children, relatives, friends and domestics, when he was consigned to his last resting place. J. M. W. A correspondent in King William county writes: "The flag raised by me on the 10th of December, 1860, the first flung to the breeze in this dear old State, still floats proudly. I promised when it was raised that it should never be lowered until Virginia had dissolved her connection with that thrice accursed Union; that act will be consummated on Thursday next by the most overwhelming majority ever cast in Virginia. When I made that promise I was considered mad by many of my friends; but I spoke the words of truth a
Violent Assault. --A man, who gave his name as John Graham, and says he halls from King William county, appeared at the first police station yesterday afternoon, to complain of Catherine Hailey, for violently beating him.--He had an ugly gash over his left eye, and another on the back of his head, which he said she inflicted with an iron weight. Justice Sadler issued a warrant for the arrest of the accused, and she will, therefore, be required to answer before the Mayor this morning.
