Brown, Henry Kirke, 1814-1886
Sculptor: born in Leyden, Mass., Feb. 24, 1814: studied portrait-painting in Boston, and after-wards spent several years in Italy, in the study of the plastic art. He settled in Brooklyn, N. Y., and became famous for his bronze statues.
A figure by him was the first bronze statue ever made in the United States.
Among his best works are an equestrian statue of Washington, in New York: an equestrian statue of General Greene, made for the State of Rhode Island; a colossal statue of De Witt Clinton, and Angel of the resurrection, in Greenwood Cemetery; a colossal equestrian statute of General Scott, and a statue of President Lincoln.
He died in Newburg, N. Y., July 10, 1886.

Duer, William, 1747-1799
Statesman; born in Devonshire, England, March 18, 1747; in 1767 was aide to Lord Clive in India; came to America, and in 1768 purchased a tract of land in Washington county, N. Y.; became colonel of the militia, judge of the county court, member of the New York Provincial Congress, and of the committee of safety.
He was one of the committee that drafted the first constitution of the State of New York (1777), and was a delegate in Congress in 1777-78; and he was secretary of the Treasury Board until the reorganization of the finance department under the national Constitution.
He was assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Hamilton until 1790. Colonel Duer married (1779) Catharine, daughter of Lord Stirling.
He died in New York City, May 7, 1799.

Nelson, Samuel 1792-1873
Jurist; born in Hebron, Washington co., N. Y., Nov. 10, 1792; graduated at Middlebury College in 1813, and admitted to the New York bar in 1817.
He was circuit judge in 1823-31; was then appointed an associate justice of the Supreme Court of New York; and was its chief-justice in 1837-45.
In the latter year President Tyler appointed him an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court to succeed Judge Smith Thompson.
In the famous Dred Scott case (q. v.) he concurred with the decision of Chief-Justice Taney, holding that, if Congress possessed power under the Constitution to abolish slavery, it must necessarily possess the like power to establish it. In 1871 he was a member of the joint high commission on the Alabama claims.
Illness compelled him to resign his office in October, 1872.
He died in Cooperstown, N. Y., Dec. 13, 1873
