Fatal accident --About half-past 1 o'clock on Saturday morning, Mr. James W. Cooke, of Greenville county, Virginia, fell from a fifth-story window in the Spotswood Hotel, fronting on Main street, to the pavæment below, killing himself instantly. He was first discovered by two of the city watch, who were standing at the corner of Main and Ninth streets, and heard the heavy of the body when it struck against the bricks. When they got to him he was lying with his face downwards, and both legs doubled up under him as if they were divested of bone; one or two spasmodic breath's were drawn after he was turned over, but not a groan or a word was heard to escape his lips. The deceased arrived in the city on the 8th instant and took lodgings at the Spotswood. On the night of the accident he returned to the hotel a few minutes past 12 o'clock, and proceeded to his room as usual.
