Queen, of the Fifteenth Illinois cavalry, and of Gen. O. O. Howard's staff, who had preserved from destruction Dr. Reynold's residence, where Dr. Porter's family was staying. He found Lieutenant McQueen at Camden, and took him in a carriage to Smithville, and thence to Raleigh, N. C., where he was sent through the lines without exchange by order of Gen. J. E. Johnston, in consideration of his services to Dr. Porter's family. General Johnston then attached the Doctor to his staff and authorizedtenant and served the balance of the war in Company E, Thirty-sixth regiment, heavy artillery, commanded by Col. William Lamb, of Norfolk, Va. During this service he was stationed at Wilmington, N. C., on the Cape Fear river, at Fort Anderson, Smithville or Fort Johnson, Fort Caswell and Fort Fisher, being in both of the bombardments of the city.
