he battles of First Manassas, West Point, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and the Suffolk campaign, he went with Longstreet to Georgia. In the fight at Will's valley, near Lookout mountain, he was captured in the fall of 1863, and thence was sent to Camp Morton, Indianapolis. After more than a year's imprisonment, he, with others, escaped in the winter of 1864, and successfully crossed the Ohio river, seven miles below Madison, Ind. His privations and suffering were great, in midwinter, poorly clad and half starved, as he made his way with frozen feet, over the Kentucky hills, avoiding his pursuers. Finally he reached friends, who gave him food, clothing and shelter, and he remained there some time, regaining his health. Then he joined the Second Kentucky cavalry, under Col.
