rtance to write you. Things remain as they were when I last wrote you. The weather has been quite unsettled, and our troops have suffered considerably from cold and rain. Yesterday an unfortunate occurrence took place, which caused the death of a very estimable young man attached to the Twentieth Regiment. There were two men stationed as pickets some distance from camp, on one of the mountains near by, one standing guard while the other rested for a while. Private Charles Harris, of Lunenburg, had just gone off duty, and instructed his comrade, who took his place, what to do and to allow no one to approach him. Harris then went down the mountain for water, and on returning it is supposed he thought he would try the sentinel on duty, and for that purpose took off his boots and advanced on him, keeping behind some bushes, when the sentinel seeing some movement, gave the order to halt, which not being obeyed, he fired, the ball passing completely through his heart, killing him ins

City defences. --The Mayor of the town of Danville sent down 24 free negroes, to work on city defences. Six also came voluntarily from Lunenburg, and a large number of factory hands were sent down from this city, whose performances, it is said, were very inefficient, they having been unused to such work and accustomed to living within doors. The convicts from the Penitentiary (100 of whom are employed) work like beavers, and the negroes from Danville and Lunenburg worked very faithfullyLunenburg worked very faithfully. The latter have now gone home. Mr. Richard Reins has general charge of the whole works, and John Hagan is Commissary for the whole of the force employed. The late action of the State Convention, together with the resolution passed by the Council on Monday, has made the services of the free negroes of the city available to do such work; and if those who are now encumbering the city with their worse than useless presence were immediately set to work, the whole of the defences could soon
d likewise the Lunenburg Cavalry left here yesterday morning for the West. The ladies of Lanenburg presented the cavalry of that county with a superb silk banner a few days prior to their leaving here.--One side of it represented the coat-of-arms of Virginia, and upon the opposite side was inscribed in magnificent gold letters, "God protect the Right." This splendid corps, commanded by Capt. Wm. H. Hatchell, evinced much gratitude upon its presentation. The patriotic daughters of old Lunenburg, inspired by a degree of love and undying devotion for their country, merit a higher panegyric than we are capable of conferring upon them. We feel satisfied if the gallant sons should ever meet the enemy, that their colors will be seen floating triumphantly after the conflict. A variety of cases of sickness have been reported at the hospital within the last few days. It is ascribed partially to the water, which possesses some very extraordinary properties.
