ediately brought his small howitzers to bear, and we soon silenced the enemy and drove him away. We afterward learned that they were the pickets of a cavalry force of three hundred, who were encamped six miles up the Panola road, who, on hearing our guns supposed we were bound for Panola, and they returned to that point.
