Tenn., where he received a sixty days furlough, to remain on this (north) side of Tennessee river. Barefooted and suffering he walked thence, in December, 1864, in snow and sleet, after the defeat of Hood, to Corinth, Miss., took train to Lauderdale Springs, and thence to Macon, Ga. From this point he walked to Mayfield, found transportation to Augusta, and thence continued his tramp, barefooted, to Columbia, S. C., where he took train to his home. In March, 1865, on the approach of Sherman, birthday, he entered school at Maysville for one year, after which he engaged in farming for three years. December 2, 1869, he was married to Kate A., daughter of the late Dr. Lathrop, of Abbeville, and in the fall of 1871 he removed to Lauderdale Springs, Miss., where he studied at the Cooper institute for three years, completing his academic education. Returning to South Carolina in 1874 he taught school at Chester two years, was principal of the high school at Ebenezer three years, and held
