Yankee celebrated this day with a great many salutes, as usual; very pleasant weather. General Pendleton was here to-day, and says that furloughs have been stopped, and that we may expect a fight very soon. Captain P. says that it is supposed that Grant will attempt to open communication with Sherman. Wrote to the Examiner. 23rd. Disturbed by rumor and report of the movement of troops, and the evacuation of Petersburg. It is supposed that these troops are going in the direction of Burkeville or Danville. 24th. Received orders today to hold ourselves in readiness to move at a moment's warning. 25th. Expecting to receive orders to move. Rodes' (now Grymes') Division, was taken from our front today and carried to the right. General Pickett extended his lines so as to cover our front, in addition to his former front. 26-28th. d also the saving not only of the road itself from Staunton River to Danville, but probably Danville, with its vast army stores, from being given to the flames. They had already destroyed the road and all the depots and telegraph officers from Burkeville to Staunton Bridge, and all rolling stock caught between these points, and their object was a complete destruction of the entire road to Danville and all cars and depots on the entire route. Over this road much the greater portion of our supave hauled the vast supplies needed at Richmond and Petersburg rapidly enough to have kept our armies from starving, or evacuating those cities nine months earlier than we did; as it was, we were weeks repairing the destruction on the road from Burkeville to Staunton River, and during that time every available wagon was called in use, and our quartermaster and commissary departments taxed to their utmost ingenuity until this connection was made over the damaged road. Below will be found some interesting extracts from Southern Journals. The Dromont battle — interesting description — horrid scenes, &c. The Columbus (Ky.) correspondent of the Memphis writing under date of Nov. 10th, communicates to that paper a most interesting description of the late battle near Columbus, from which we make the following extract: Our brigade was ordered under arms about noon — or rather, it was kept under arms all the morning, but I was ordered the river about noon. Our men were previously anxious to be led over noon in the morning; but Gen. Polk would not allow it, as he expected an attack from this side of the river — which was certainly the plan of the enemy, but it was not carried out. Herst, and the train left him at Burkeville, Va. The said boy is about 30 years of age, dark complexion, about 5 feet 8 or 10 inches high.--His general weight is about 150 pounds. One object of the daring scout was de by the escapes of a prisoner from Morgan's pickets, who communicated information of his movements to the telegraph operator at Bell's station, some miles this side of Cave City, by which means the train from Nashville, having on board the prisoners of Morgan's party taken at Lebanon, was turned back, and thus the gallant Colonel was disappointed in liberating them. From Cave City Col. Morgan returned by way of Burkeville, where he captured seven of Wolford's cavalry who were armed with Sharp's rifles and revolvers; thence by Livingston and White Pi los to Sparta. From Sparta our last intelligence of the partisan Colonel is that he was making his way through the mountains to Chattanooga. Whether he will "turn up" next in Northwestern Virginia or on the Ohio river near Paducah, we have no intimation. It was reported in Kentucky that Col. Wolford, whose cavalry fought Morgan at Lebanon, was wounded in
