apolis on the evening of the twenty-fourth of August. On our way to points on the Mississippi and along the frontier, we were treated with much kindness by the remaining citizens, especially at Clearwater. We went from Forest City to Hutchinson and Glencoe. Along this route we found the country almost entirely deserted. To encourage those still remaining and also to attract to their homes those who had left, we returned to Hutchinson, and from thence on the second of October we went to Acton. We there camped in the yard of Mr. Baker, the first victim of the outbreak. During the night Messrs. Branham, Holmes, and Sparry came through from Forest City to inform us that the home guards of that place had been attacked by a large body of Indians, the day before.
