Brenton, William, 1666-1674 Royal governor; born in England; was governor of Rhode Island in 1666 under the charter from Charles II., and was one of the original nine proprietors of Rhode Island. Brenton's Point and Brenton's Reef in Narraganset Bay were named after him. He died in Newport, R. I., in 1674.
