Usher, John Palmer 1816-1889 Statesman; born in Brookfield, N. Y., Jan. 9, 1816; settled in Indiana, where he studied law and practised; elected to the legislature and later was attorney-general. On March 20, 1862, he was made first assistant Secretary of the Interior, and on Jan. 8, 1863, succeeded to the post of Secretary of the Interior, which he resigned May 15, 1865; then resumed private practice and was made consulting attorney of the Union Pacific Railroad. He died in Philadelphia, Pa., April 13, 1889.
