Brigadier-General John Marshall Jones Brigadier-General John Marshall Jones was born at Charlottesville, Va., July 26, 1820, and was educated for the profession of arms at West Point, graduating and receiving the rank of brevet second lieutenant of infantry in 1841. His first service was at Fort Mackinac, Mich. In 1843-45 he was stationed successively at Detroit, in Florida and in Texas, with the army of occupation; but he did not participate in the Mexican war, during that period and until 1852, being on duty at the military academy as an instructor in infantry tactics. He was promoted first lieutenant, Seventh infantry, in 1847.
