A wharf of poles and sand-bags had been made in Mud River, about 1300 yards from the battery, to which all the materials were brought in boats from Daufuskie Island, the nearest dry land, four miles away. It had been intended to carry the guns and ammunition for the Venus Point battery on flats through New River and Wall's Cut into Wright River, and thence by Mud River into the Savannah, under convoy of the gun-boats; but the delay threatened by tide and weather, and the probability of encountering torpedoes, for which the vessels were not prepared, determined a change of plan; and it was decided, without depending on the gun-boats, to tow the flats to the Mud River wharf, and haul the guns across the marsh. heir passage down to Fort Pulaski, and afterwards passed up the river again to Savannah, where one of them sunk at the dock. As a demonstration the appearance of the gun-boats was a success, as Savannah was thrown into a great state of excitement, and all the energies of the people were put forth to increase the military defences. The information required by this expedition was gained without loss of life or injury to the gun-boats. Surveys and examinations were made up Wright and Mud Rivers by Commander John Rodgers, and a great amount of good service done. The officers and boats' crews were in continual danger from the fire of bush-whacking Confederates, who were always ready for a fight. The names of Commanders John Rodgers, Drayton, C. R. P. Rodgers, Godon, Rhind, Stevens, Balch, Ammen, Truxton, Watmough, and Semmes, were conspicuous wherever a Confederate shot was heard, or wherever there was a chance to gain a point on the enemy. sland. The crew got off in boats and made their escape up the river to Savannah, though pursued for some distance by boats from Fort Pulaski. Before leaving the vessel the crew set her on fire, and she was totally consumed. It was thought by the Federals that her intention was to go to sea by a route which was known to be practicable, namely, after running under the fire of the fort a short distance, to enter Wright river, and thence through Wall's cut and other narrow channels, or down Mud river and entering Wright river entirely out of range of the fort. Savannah was thrown into a state of great alarm, and all the energies of the place have been exerted to the utmost to increase its military defences, for which purpose troops have been withdrawn from other places. On February 18th, Captain John Rodgers had carried out the objects for which he had been sent into Mud and Wright Rivers, and after mooring the small steamer Hale to protect an army battery planted at Venus Point, on the Savannah River, he returned to Port Royal with the force under his command. In relation to this the flag-officer informed the Department that Captain John Rodgers had a force of four gunboats and two purchased steamers, and had rendered the most efficient support and protection to the military parties in the planting of this battery. he cutting off of communication between Savannah and Fort Pulaski, the Savannah Republican, of Tuesday says: A reconnaissance by the steamer Savannah, yesterday, brought to light all the movements of the enemy in our river. They have erected three batteries, which effectually cut off communication with the fort--one of four guns on Venus's Point, one of the same number of guns on a small marsh just above Long Island, and commanding the South channel, and the third on boats moored in Mud river. The three are located in the form of a triangle, and could not be passed by any vessel in our service. The guns are all of a heavy calibre, most of them throwing shot to the distance of three miles. A number was fired at the Savannah, but they all fell short. The Atlanta Commonwealth, of Monday last, has information from passengers just from Tennessee that Nashville is now in the possession of the enemy. General Johnson deserted the city on the Friday previous, falling back upon
residents were killed while attempting to escape from the place in boats. The steam mills and all the lumber in the place were burnt; also, Mooney's foundry, and a Confederate gun boat on the stocks. The Savannah Republican, of Friday, says: The Confederate steamer Savannah proceeded down the river yesterday afternoon, look after the enemy's vessels, which were reported in the main channel. There were not, it seems, any of them found in the river, but in their old position in Mud river. These, together with the batteries of the enemy, opened fire on the Savannah, and expended 150 shot and shall at her, a few of which were responded to with deliberation by our gallant Commodore. "Nobody hurt on our ride." We have a long letter from our Savannah correspondent, which we are compelled (from lack of force in the office) to withhold until to-morrow.
