has given his attention to farming and has been very successful. He located at his present home in 1869. He is a member of Stephen D. Lee camp, U. C. V., of Anderson. He is a director of the Anderson bank and also of the Anderson cotton mills. He has been twice married, first to Miss Louisa Lesly, and the second time to Miss Susan Simpson. He has three living children, two of whom are the daughters of his first wife, and one of his second. Since 1870 he has been postmaster at Varennes, Anderson county. Evan Norton Evan Norton was another of the thousands of young soldiers who were attending school when the war broke out and left the schoolhouse for the field of battle. He enlisted and served from August, 1861, in Company E, First South Carolina (Gregg's) regiment of infantry, as a private until 1863, when he was appointed sergeant, and soon after was elected lieutenant, in which official station he served until the close of the war, surrendering at Appomattox with Lee.
