urpose, but that the nation would not, in his opinion, permit it to make the attempt, if disposed to do so. I am struck with the fact that there is so general a disposition among intelligent Englishmen to believe that the time has come to cease to depend on any one country for cotton. They are, therefore, disposed to consider the present conjuncture to be eminently favorable for securing the cultivation of cotton in Turkey — especially in Asia Minor and Syria--in Africa, in India, in Queensland, (the most Northern organized province in Australia,) in Jamaica, and any and all other parts of the globe where this important staple can be cultivated. They wisely believe that it is not prudent to depend so much upon any one country whatever for an article of manufacture and commerce which is now so intimately connected with the prosperity and welfare of so many millions of the English people, to say nothing of other nations. They admit that the first year's deprivation of American co
