s those in which she sang the song of Italy. Her love for her adopted country was not a mere romantic attachment to its beauty and treasures of art and historic associations. It was a practical love for its men and women. She longed to see them elevated, and therefore she longed to see them free. Her affection for Italy found its first expression in Casa Guidi windows, which was published in 1851. This poem, says the preface, contains the impressions of the writer upon events in Tuscany of which she was a witness. . . .. It is a simple story of personal impressions whose only value is in the intensity with which they were received, as proving her warm affection for a beautiful and unfortunate country, and the sincerity with which they were related, as indicating her own good faith and freedom from partisanship.
