Galveston, Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi fall into the Federal hands. an expedition of the Army and Navy defeated at Sabine Pasch extends from the mouth of the Mississippi as far west as Sabine Pass, and the difficult bars and channels leading to Galveston, Matagorda and Corpus Christi, where none but the smallest vessels could enter, and which afforded safe refuges for blockaded it. Unfortunately the gallant Kittredge was surprised and with his boat's crew captured while reconnoitering. ould no longer obtain supplies from that quarter. Farragut was engaged a part of the season with his ships below Port Hudson in bombarding that place. In these operations the Mortar vessels bore a conspicuous part, until Port Hudson fell, with Vicksburg, on the 4th of July, 1863, and the Mississippi was once more opened to the sea. The blockade of the Southern coast,within the limits of Admiral Farragut's command, had, in the main, been efficient and successful, although reverses at Galveston and Sabine Pass gave the enemy something on which to congratulate themselves. These reverses, however, of the Union arms were of no permanent advantage to the Confederates, as the whole coast, from the mouth of the Mississippi to that of the Rio Grande, was so closely guarded by the Union Navy that blockade-running was reduced to very insignificant proportions. their protecting fire and finally gained the day, to the fall of Fort Fisher, the Navy played a more active part than was perhaps ever before taken by naval forces, and though illy supplied with the proper kind of vessels, they seldom experienced reverses. There were the fights of Hatteras, Port Royal, New Orleans, Mobile, Vicksburg, and all along the Mississippi and its tributaries, Red River, Arkansas. White, Tennessee, Cumberland and Ohio Rivers, Grand Gulf, Port Hudson, Charleston, Galveston, and the whole coast of Texas brought under control. This was a large field of naval operations, seldom equalled in the history of war, and never exceeded, as far as naval successes are concerned. E. McKay, of the Princess Royal. The Will-o‘--Wisp had been run on shore off the harbor of Galveston, where she was caught in the act of landing some heavy guns, and wa was surrendered to the commander of the Mississippi Squadron. Galveston was surrendered on the 7th of June, and the place taken possessio and requesting that a portion of the gun-boats should be kept at Galveston for the protection of the city!
