Cilley, Joseph 1735-1799
Military officer; born in Nottingham, N. H., in 1735; took part in the dismantling of the fort at Portsmouth in 1774; led a company of volunteers into Boston after the battle of Lexington; made colonel of the 1st New Hampshire Regiment in 1777; took part in the attack on Ticonderoga and in the actions at Bemis's Heights, Monmouth, and Stony Point.
He died in Nottingham, N. H., Aug. 25, 1799.

Naval officer; born in Portsmouth, N. H., Jan. 11, 1813; entered the United States navy as midshipman in February, 1829.
He was commissioned lieutenant in 1841, and made commander in 1861.
In command of the iron-clad Tecumseh, he perished when she was blown up by a torpedo in Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864, he then holding the rank of commodore.

Elwyn, Alfred Langdon, 1804-1884
Philanthropist; born in Portsmouth, N. H., July 9, 1804; graduated at Harvard College in 1823; studied medicine, but never practised; became known as a philanthropist.
He originated the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society and Farm-school, of which he was president in 1850; was also president of various philanthropic institutions.
He was the author of Glossary of supposed Americanisms; and Letters to the Hon. John Langdon, during and after the Revolution.
He died in Philadelphia, Pa., March 15, 1884.
