Bangs, John Kendrick, 1862-
Author; born in Yonkers, N. Y., May 27, 1862; was graduated at Columbia University in 1883; studied law; became associate editor of Life in 1884; editor of Drawer in 1888, and of Literary notes in Harper's magazine in 1898; and editor of Harper's weekly in 1900.

Tilden, Samuel Jones 1814-1886
Statesman; born in New Lebanon, N. Y., Feb. 9, 1814; entered Yale College, but his health failed, and he returned home.
He finished his studies at the University of New York: studied law with Benjamin F. Butler, and entered upon its practice; became a journalist, and in 1844 established the Daily news in New York City.
He soon returned to the bar and practised his profession with great success.
In 1874 he was elected governor of New York, and broke up the corrupt canal ring ; and in 1876 was the Democratic candidate for the Presidency, after which he retired to private life, but exercised great influence in the councils of his party.
He died at his country seat, Greystone, near Yonkers, Aug. 4, 1886, leaving a fortune of several million dollars, the bulk of which he desired to be used in founding a great public library in New York City, but his will was successfully contested.
