Carpenter, Frank Bicknell 1830-
Painter and author; born in Homer, N. Y., in 1830; was mostly self-educated in art; settled in New York in 1851, and became an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1852.
He painted numerous portraits of Presidents, statesmen, and other noted persons.
His best-known works are the historical painting of President Lincoln signing the emancipation proclamation, now in the Capitol in Washington, and Arbitration, a view of the British and American commissioners on the Alabama claims in session in Washington in 1871, presented to Queen Victoria in 1892.
He wrote Six months in the White House with Abraham Lincoln.
He died May 23, 1900.

Author; born in Nashville, Tenn., in 1848; graduated at the Nasville Female Academy; subsequently settled in New York City.
She was twice married.
For twelve years she was associate editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, and for nine years president of the Brooklyn Seidl Society of Music.
She was co-editor with Anton Seidl of the department of musical terms of the Standard dictionary.
Her works include The Ladies of the White House; The Hearth-stone, or life at home; Chinese Gordon; Howard, the Christian hero; The Buddhist Diet book, etc.

Author; born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1779; accompanied the British forces to the United States in 1812; and witnessed the burning of the White House in Washington, D. C. When peace was concluded he travelled through the Eastern and Northern States.
His publications include History of the War between England and the United States; A picturesque journey through the United States of North America; Considerations on the Republican system of the United States compared with the Representative governments of Europe; The aristocracy of Europe and America, etc. He died near Brussels in 1834.
