Brooks, John, 1752-
Soldier and statesman; born in Medford, Mass., May 31, 1752; received a common-school education, studied medicine, and settled in its practice at Reading, where he commanded a company of minute-men when the Revolution began.
With his men he was engaged in the affairs of April 19, 1775, at Lexington and Concord.
Brooks was active in intrenching Breed's Hill (see Bunker Hill) on the night of June 16, 1775, and was major of a regiment that assisted in fortifying Dorchester Heights.
Early in 1776 he accompanied it to Long Island, and fought there.
The battle of White Plains tested his capacity as a disciplinarian and leader; and early in 1777 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the 8th Massachusetts Regiment, which was chiefly recruited by himself.
He became colonel of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment late in 1778; and he accompanied Arnold on his expedition to relieve Fort Stanwix in 1777.

Flint, Timothy 1780-1840
Clergyman; born in Reading, Mass., July 11, 1780; graduated at Harvard in 1880; became minister of the Congregational Church at Lunenburg, Mass., in 1802, but resigned in 1814.
He went West as a missionary, but was obliged to give up in consequence of ill health.
He then devoted himself to literature, and edited the Western review in Cincinnati, and, for a short time, the Knickerbocker magazine in New York.
Among his publications are Recollections of ten years passed in the Valley of the Mississippi; Biography and history of the Western States in the Mississippi Valley (2 volumes); Indian wars of the West; Memoir of Daniel Boone, etc. He died in Salem, Mass., Aug. 16, 1840.

Prentiss, Charles 1774-1820
Author; born in Reading, Mass., Oct. 8, 1774; graduated at Harvard College in 1795; and entered journalism.
His publications include Life of Robert treat Paine; Life of Gen. William Eaton; History of the United States; Trial of Calvin and Hopkins, etc. He died in Brimfield, Mass., Oct. 20, 1820.
