Lockwood, Belva Ann Bennett 1830- Lawyer; born in Royalton, N. Y., Oct. 24, 1830; graduated at Genesee College, Lima, N. Y.; married, in 1848, Uriah H. McNall (died 1853), taught school in 1857-68, and married Dr. Ezekiel Lockwood in the latter year. She began the study of law in Washington; was admitted to the bar in 1873, and began practice before the Supreme Court and the Court of Claims in 1879. Afterwards she became prominent in the temperance, peace, and woman's suffrage movements. In 1888 she was nominated by the Equal Rights party for President of the United States. She represented the United States at the international congress of charities and corrections in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1896, and for several years was secretary of the American branch of the international peace bureau.

Raymond, Henry Jarvis 1820- Journalist; born in Lima, N. Y., Jan. 24, 1820; graduated at the University of Vermont in 1840; studied law; became assistant editor of the New York Tribune at its commencement in April, 1841. He was the first editor of Harper's New monthly magazine; and in September, 1851, issued the first number of the New York Daily times. In 1854 he was elected lieutenant-governor of the State of New York, and was prominent in the organization of the Republican party in 1854-56. In 1861 he was elected a member and speaker of the New York Assembly, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate in 1863. He was elected to Congress in 1864. He visited Europe a third time in 1868, and his career was suddenly Henry Jarvis Raymond. terminated by death in New York City, June 18, 1869. Ruger, Thomas Howard 1833- Military officer; born in Lima, N. Y., April 2, 1833; graduated at West Point in 1854, but resigned the next year and became a lawyer in Jamesville, Wis. In 1861-62 he served in the Shenandoah Valley as colonel of the 3d Wisconsin Volunteers, and was in the battles of Antietam in 1862 and Chancellorsville in 1863. At Gettysburg he commanded a division, having been made brigadier-general in November, 1862. He commanded a brigade in the Atlanta campaign in 1864, and a division in operations in North Carolina until the surrender of Johnston. He was brevetted brigadier-general, United States army, in 1867; was promoted to the full rank in 1886, and to major-general in 1895; and was retired April 2, 1897.

Tudor, William 1779-1830 Diplomatist; born in Boston, Mass., Jan. 28, 1779; graduated at Harvard College in 1796; travelled in Europe; founded the Anthology Club and contributed to its journal, the Monthly Anthology; founded the North American review in 1815; published Letters on the Eastern States; was consul at Lima in 1823; charge d'affaires in Brazil, in 1827; and was the originator of the Bunker Hill monument. He died in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 9, 1830.

Willard, Frances Elizabeth 1839-1898 Reformer; born in Churchville, N. Y., Sept. 28, 1839; graduated at the Northwestern Female College in 1858; was for some years a school-teacher in various Western towns, and taught the natural sciences in the Northwestern College. In 1867 she became preceptress in the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, at Lima, N. Y. On Feb. 14, 1871, she was elected president of the college which had recently been established in connection with the Northwestern University of the Methodist denomination, in deference to the popular idea of the co-education of the sexes. It was the first time such an honor was conferred upon a woman. On her return from an extended foreign tour in Europe, Syria, and Egypt, in 1871, Miss Willard lectured with success, in Chicago, on the Educational aspects of the woman question. She was president of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 till her death; founded the World's Christian Temperance Union in 1883; becam
