Up to that period a small force of the enemy continued to occupy a point in New Kent county, known as the "Brick House," but not one had visited West Point since the grand flight of the gunboats and transports immediately after McClellan "changed his base." They doubtless find more scope for their thievish propensities on the Peninsula between James and York rivers, where a direct communication with Fortress Monroe affords them greater security.
