nces and store wagons loaded with anesthetics, surgical instruments, nourishment, tonics, stimulants and every species of relief. Two large central offices of the commission, with depots of supplies, were located at Washington, D. C., and Louisville, Ky., through which gateways supplies of all kinds went to the army. Ten branch commissions were established at ten cities of the North, all of them subordinate and tributary to the central offices, and all managed by women,—one of them being loen they held appointments from Miss Dix. But as the enlarged operations of the army in the west and south-west and the south greatly increased the demand for women nurses, other superintendents of nurses were appointed at St. Louis, Chicago and Louisville, who detailed them from their own sections of country, accompanied them to the field and located them where they were needed.
