Committed to jail as a Runaway. --Was committed to the jail of the corporation of the city of Norfolk, on the 2d day of January, 1861, Negro Man Wm. Johnson. The said negro man is five feet three inches high, and weighs about 135 pounds; has one scar on right arm above his elbow; light complexion; about thirty years old. Had on when committed to jail, black cloth coat, black pants, glazed cap, and says he was born free, in Baltimore, Maryland. Thos. J. Corprew. Political. -- The Norfolk Herald states that a paper, signed by over 800 persons in the city of Portsmouth, has been sent to Messrs. Holladay and White, delegates from Norfolk county, requesting them to "stand by the Union until the last link is broken, " and that one equally as large has been sent to General Geo. Blow, delegate from Norfolk, with the same request.

of establishing a coast guard, which was resolved upon by the late Administration, and will be adhered to by the present. The advices by this arrival from the home squadron are interesting. Three ships-of-war only will be left in the Gulf of Mexico until political affairs become more settled here. The Macedonian is the only newly commissioned ship to remain out. No officers have been gazetted to replace those whose resignations from the fleet have been tendered. The craft that left for Norfolk had no provisions or stores to spare.
