Committed to jail as a Runaway. --Was committed to the jail of the corporation of the city of Norfolk, on the 2d day of January, 1861. Negro Man Wm. Johnson. The said negro man is five feet three inches high, and weighs about 135 pounds; has one scar on right arm above his elbow; light complexion: about thirty years old. Had on when committed to jail, black cloth coat, black pants, glazed cap, and says he was born free, in Baltimore, Maryland. Thos. J. Corprew. Sergeant City Nol as a Runaway. --Was committed to the jail of the corporation of the city of Norfolk, on the 2d day of January, 1861. Negro Man Wm. Johnson. Peter Schwine, in jail at Wetumpka, Ala., for the murder of his wife and a servant, committed suicide last week, by cutting his throat. Mr. Raymond, editor of the Times, it is understood, will be appointed Consul to Paris, a very agreeable situation, with a salary of $5,000 a year. The Albemarle (Elizabeth City) Southern, of the 20th inst., says that Hon. Kenneth Rayner has come out in favor of the secession of North Carolina. The U. S. sloop-of-war Cumberland arrived at Norfolk, Va., Saturday night, from Vera Cruz. The dwelling of Thos. Worsham, in Prince George county, Va., was destroyed by fire on Saturday last. Loss $8,000. Stephen H. Payne, a clerk in the Brooklyn (N. Y.) post-office, fell dead in the street on Friday last. The total expenses of the New York Fire Department, for the past year, foot up the handsome sum of $268,000! Mr. Marsh, the Minister to Sardinia, will leave, via Havre, about the 1st of May.
