A monument to Major James W. Thomson, Confederate States Artillery.
With an account of his death and of the organization of Chew's Batter ised that the amount needed for the erection of the monument to Major Thomson has yet been secured, but we feel it will be. For additional pa ptain Chew had just received his commission as major) First Lieutenant James W. Thomson, a son of John A. Thomson, of Summit Point, was elect , was near when Major Thomson was killed, of our county.
Major James W. Thomson's remains are buried in the third grave north of Ashby brot llowing circular was issued to the survivors of Chew's (afterwards Thomson's Battery) Stuart's Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia, an sed to erect a monument over the grave of our late captain, Major James W. Thomson.
A design has been chosen, and approved by Dr. Pem.

For additional particulars of the career of the famed Chew's Battery, see account of a reunion of its survivors, held i Captain Williams then introduced Captain Wm. N. McDonald, formerly an ordnance officer of the Turner Ashby Brigade, who delivered an interesting eulogy on Major James W. Thomson, who lost his life while leading a cavalry charge at High Bridge on General Lee's retreat from Petersburg.
Captain McDonald said:
The mighty throng of valley, the land he loved so well, and these loyal harts of his old command here witnessed the splendor of his courage and the nobility of his action.
Major James W. Thomson was born October 28th, 1843, in Jefferson county, Va. He was the son of John A. and Mary E. Thomson.
