Betters were now at sea as to the result. Oakland and Conductor each having a heat, whilst the first favorite had showed second best on each, without being able to show in front. For the third heat, Orien out the running, and won in 4.02. The fourth heat and the stake was also won by Orien in 4.10, the mud having told heavily upon each of the contestants. After going half a mile, Oakland quickened his pace, and soon collaring his leader, passed to the front maintaining his position to the end of the heat, which he won handily in 5: 53¾. In the second heat, Orion again led off, Conductor second, and Oakland third. The jockey of Conductor finding that Orion was going for the hear, pulled him to the rear to abide his time, and Oakland taking up the challenge, went up in striking distance, and there remained for two miles and a half, when he answered to the call made on him, gave Orion the go-by, and ran home a winner in 5 : 52½. On Tuesday, the 29th ultimo, the two men heat post-stake, three subscribers was contended for by McDaniel. Green and Ward, and won by the former in two straight heats. We append a summary. Wednesday, the 30th ultimo, was a match for $10,000, three-mile heats, between D. McDaniel's "Oakland" and C. Green's "Conductor." As these horses had met before, the match attracted an unusually large crowd of turfites to witness their final trial of speed and endurance, each horse having many backers, who were sanguine of success.
