He left school, returned home and enlisted in April, 1861, in Company E, Ninth regiment, South Carolina infantry, as a private, and served as such until December, 1861, when he was discharged on account of ill health. He returned home, stayed one month, then returned to the army; but six weeks later was again discharged for the same cause. He again returned home, but after about two months went to Charleston and enlisted in Johnson's company, the Palmetto light artillery, J. S. White commanding. He served with them until September, 1863, when he lost his right arm at Battery Wagner and again retired from the service. He was in the following engagements: Falls Church, Va., Shell Point, on James island, and at Battery Wagner, where he lost his arm. Returning home he entered Wofford college at Spartanburg, S.
