The election for the Mayoralty has just closed in Portsmouth, which resulted in the selection of John O'Lawrence, (Union,) of that city, over Geo. W. Grice, (Secessionist.) The fact of the triumph of the Union party at this ne created some surprise among a number, who were sanguine of the success of the Secession candidates. A number of our working men have recently been displaced from the Gosport Navy-Yard. I hear it started that Mr. Jas. C. White, of Portsmouth, (Bell and Everett,) will receive the appointment of Postmaster of that city.--It is also reported that Capt. Ferguson former Mayor of this city, will receive an appointment of Custom-House officer; although I learn that strong effort is being made to retain the present incumbent. Captain F. to commander of one of the finest companies in the city, numbering over 100 men, and enjoys the esteem and confidence of our people. Excuse haste, " Adelphos."
