On the receipt of the news of the fall of Fort Sumter meetings were held on the 15th and 16th of April, and speeches were made by leading citizens. The first legal town-meeting to consider matters relating to the war was held April 27th. Five thousand dollars were appropriated to aid in forming a military company for active service; each man was to receive a
