was blown up by a torpedo off Yazoo city, Miss., was the first Yankee gunboat ever used on the Mississippi. Her bow was blown out of the water. No lives were lost on board. The torpedo was of the demijohn make. A letter from Cairo, dated July 17, states that Gen. Pillow has appeared in the vicinity of Fort Herman, on the Tennessee river, with quite a large force, and that the garrison evacuated the post, and fell back to Paducah. The property of Dr. Garnett, a son in-law of Gen. H. A. Wise, has just been confiscated by the U. S. Government during the lifetime of the owner. "Running Joe Hooker" has gone out West to take some command there — among the Indians, probably. The trial of Dr. Wright, in Norfolk, Va., for killing Lieut. Sanborn, commanding a negro company, is progressing. His demeanor at the bar is described by Yankee correspondents as "cold, stern, defiant, and extremely repulsive." Lemuel Bowden and L. H.
