Woodbury, Augustus 1825- Author; born in Beverly, Mass., in 1825; graduated at the Harvard Divinity School in 1849, and was ordained in the Unitarian Church; became pastor of the Westminster Unitarian Church in Providence, R. I., in 1853; was chairman of the Rhode Island board of inspection for prisons in 1866-77; appointed chaplain of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment in 1861, and was chaplain-inchief of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1874-75. In 1883 he became president of the Providence Athenaeum. His publications include The preservation of the republic; Narrative of the campaign of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment in the spring and summer of 1861; An Historical sketch of the prisons and jails of Rhode Island; Memorial of Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, etc.

Surgeons Rivers and Carr. Chaplain — Augustus Woodbury. The Regimental Band contains 22 musicians. The uniform of the Regiment consists of the regulation hat, a loose blue blouse, and gray pantaloons. A plain leather belt around the waist sustains the cartridge-box, the bayonet, and six-baMoses Jenkins, a private in this regiment; is a gentleman worth one million dollars. When the regiment was organized he destroyed his ticket for a passage to Europe that he might remain to fight in defence of the flag of his country. The Rev. Augustus Woodbury resigned his charge unconditionally; the trustees refused at first to accept his resignation. s were made from them. The total receipts of the New England society were $314,874.07. In addition to the regular hospital supplies, the society distributed in the hospitals 168,476 books and pamphlets. A vast deal of relief and supply work was done by Massachusetts women during the war, besides that accomplished under the auspices of the Sanitary Commission. The same is true of men, not only in Massachusetts, but throughout the North. In the autumn of 1861, Miss Anna Lowell, now Mrs. Woodbury, with other Boston ladies, organized the Union Hall Association of Boston, which was formed to give employment to the wives of the volunteer soldiers. Among the ladies interested with Miss Lowell were Mrs. Oliver Wendell Holmes and Mrs. James T. Fields. These ladies took large contracts of army clothing at the government price, and obtained contributions of money from wealthy people, which enabled them to pay good wages to the sewing-women.
