The gallant behavior of this noble officer, in endeavoring to rally our forces and maintain a stand after Zollicoffer's fall, in the battle of Fishing Creek, and the intrepidity with which he faced the foe where balls fell thickest, leading and encouraging the troops, is the theme of unmeasured praise on the lips of every officer and soldier from the field whas thirty-nine killed and one hundred and twenty-seven wounded. Among the wounded were Colonel McCook, of the Ninth Ohio, commanding a brigade, and his aid, Lieutenant Burt, of the Eighth United States infantry. The loss of the rebels was Zollicoffer and one hundred and fourteen others killed and buried, one hundred and sixteen wounded, and forty-five prisoners not wounded, five of whom are surgeons, and Lieutenant-Colonel Carrier, of the Seventeenth Tennessee Regiment. It appears that General Zollicoffer lost his way in the bushes, and suddenled for a hand to hand conflict. One of General Zollicoffer's aids shot at Colonel Fry, but only briately drew his six-shooter and brought General Zollicoffer from his saddle at the first fire. Thepoint on Fishing creek, five miles north of Zollicoffer's entrenchments, and consequently near the forces of Thomas and Schoepff should attack Zollicoffer in his entrenchments at the same time. Butised with more success in a better cause, Gen. Zollicoffer, with a force of about 8,000 men, marched the close proximity in which he was to General Zollicoffer, he took every precaution, and when, at surprising General Thomas in his camp, General Zollicoffer found the whole force, fresh from a lone field, and among these were the bodies of Zollicoffer and Peyton.
