Major-General Henry Heth Major-General Henry Heth was born in Chesterfield county, Va., December 16, 1825. He is the son of John Heth, of the Black Heth estate, in that county, who served as a colonel in the volunteer forces of Virginia, and as an officer in the United States navy in the war of 1812, when he was captured with Decatur and taken to Bermuda, whence he escaped with two comrades in an open boat. An uncle of his, Col. William Heth, fought at Quebec under General Montgomery and was distinguished in the revolutionary war. Henry Heth was educated at the United States military academy, and graduated in 1847 with the rank of brevet second lieutenant of the Second infantry. Pherson on the 18th to the Georgia railroad, several miles east of Decatur, where Garrard's cavalry and M. L. Smith's division broke up four miles of the road. Schofield reached the town of Decatur. On the next day, McPherson moved west into Decatur, and Schofield marched thence Decatur, and Schofield marched thence toward Atlanta from the east. General Johnston withdrew across the Chattahoochee and was relieved by General Hood. On the 20th of July, Hardee and A. P. Stewart attacked Thomas as he was crossing Peachtree creek. General Hardee explained his lack of success by the withdrawal of Cleburne's division at a critical moment to meet the advance of McPherson from Decatur. During the crossing of Peachtree creek by the Federals, July 19th, Gen. D. H. Reynolds, with his Arkansas brigade, was briskly engaged at Moore's mill, repulsing an attack and capturing a considerable number of prisoners. The Ninth Arkansas took two Federal flags. As it was certain that the rebels would soon become aware of the movement of Sherman's column, and in all probability attempt at once to prevent or obstruct it, Grant now ordered McPherson to send an expedition to Canton and Jackson. This was designed to distract the enemy, and threaten other points still further east, so that, if possible, all the hostile force in Mississippi might be recalled to McPherson's front, and the march of Sherman from Memphis by way of Corinth, Tuscumbia, and Decatur left undisturbed. All honor to the United States sailors of the North, who had no sympathy with the Hartford Convention, and nobly did their duty— Perry, Bainbridge, Stewart, Lawrence, Porter, Preble, &c. The Don't Give up the Ship of dying Lawrence is a precious legacy to the whole American people. But the unmaritime South claims, among the naval heroes of that period, Decatur, of Maryland; MacDonough, of Delaware; Jacob Jones, of same State; the two Shubricks, of South Carolina; Jesse D. Elliott, of Maryland; Blakely, of North Carolina, etc. A very large proportion of the naval heroes of the war of 1812 came from Maryland. In the Mexican war, the commanders-in-chief on both lines were born in Virginia, one of whom became President for his exploits, and the other an unsuccessful candidate for the Presidency.
