Of the historians, Thucydides
ended his history,i.e. with this year. having
included a period of twenty-two years in eight Books, although some divide it into nineModern editions recognize eight Books.; and Xenophon
and Theopompus have begun at the point where Thucydides left off. Xenophon embraced a period of
forty-eight years, and Theopompus set forth the facts of Greek history for seventeen years and
brings his account to an end with the sea-battle of Cnidus in twelve Books.The
Hellenica of Xenophon covers the years 411-362 B.C., ending with the battle of Mantineia, and the Hellenica of Theopompus, which is not extant,
included the years 410-394 B.C.
Such was the state of affairs
in Greece and Asia. The Romans were waging war with the Aequi and invaded their territory with a
strong army; and investing the city named Bolae they took it by siege.
