ia, eight or nine hundred strong. It was newly clad with the regular United States uniform, and was well armed and equipped. It had arrived in Gettysburg the night before and moved out that morning on the Cashtown road. This was a part of Governor Curtin's contingent for the defence of the State, and seemed to belong to that class of men who regard discretion as the better part of valor. It was well that the regiment took to its heels so quickly, or some of its members might have been hurt,ising from the burning bridge, and when I reached Wrightsville I found the bridge entirely destroyed.
